Initially the company was creating traditional paper Benefit Guides to be distributed to their clients’ employees. While that was the go-to business model for most insurance brokers – and still is for some today – Brio realized it had become counterproductive. According to Jordan Cohen, Strategy Manager at the company, printed Benefit Guides were an inefficient tool for benefits communication. They were expensive to produce and could be easily tossed aside.

Brio started developing their progressive approach to employee benefits back in 2004. It was then that they decided to become a benefit brokerage/consulting firm. They became a one-stop-shop for their clients, offering healthcare packages to employers and educating employees about their options.
“We advise and educate clients on what benefit plans make the most sense for them, what to charge their employees, and what additional benefits their employees may be interested in. But we’re also the broker, meaning that we sell the benefits as well.”
The company actively sought out ways to overcome the main challenge in the industry – communicating benefits to employees in a way they preferred. By meeting with their clients once every quarter, holding presentations and regular phone calls, Brio managed to solve part of the problem.

Obviously, Brio couldn’t step away from printing altogether, as some of the company’s clients still preferred physical copies. “We would send out PDF guides and put them up on our clients’ benefits websites or portals. It helped us get away from printing.”
Every Benefit Guide was generated with special employee benefits software where Brio could input client information and receive a ready PDF. It could then be tweaked as needed. That approach worked well, but some clients requested more advanced employee benefits technology for their guides.
“We looked into FlippingBook after coming across their name. We thought it would be a great fit for our clients’ needs, even if they themselves didn’t know they needed it yet. Communication is always changing and we do our best to stay on top of the latest trends.”
Brio’s clients appreciated the renewed digital format of their Benefit Guides. The documents could be easily emailed to employees or embedded on internal benefits portals, so the necessary information was always at hand. Available as direct links, the documents replaced heavy attachments and expensive print copies.

And if they wanted a paper copy to go with their digital guide, they could easily print one on their own.
